Photographing the In-Between: Benji Zecher on the Pacific’s Changing Edges

Hey I’m Benji, a photographer, freediver, and researcher who documents dynamic spaces and species… As a queer person, I love to take photos of the in-between spaces: the edge of a kelp forest, where the reef meets the mangroves, winding estuary mouths and many more.

I like to document spaces that undergo consistent change so I can help people better understand how to live with the effects of a changing climate.

I use my background in landscape architecture and ecological restoration as a foundation to photograph the relationship between people and place. I am currently based on Coast Salish Territory in Vancouver, Canada, where you can often find me in a kelp forest, looking for critters on the beach, or laying on a bed of moss somewhere deep in the forest.

Please enjoy this selection of photos from a recent project documenting the dynamic in-between spaces around the Pacific Ocean who are being disproportionately affected by climate change.
