SEVENSEAS Media 2025 Impact Report

Letter from the Founder

Dear Friends, Readers, and Supporters,

As we begin 2026, I find myself reflecting less on individual moments and more on patterns. Patterns in the messages we receive. Patterns in who shows up week after week. Patterns in what the conservation community is asking for and what continues to be missing from the broader landscape.

SEVENSEAS Media was created to remove barriers. Barriers to information, opportunity, visibility, and community. In 2025, it became clearer than ever that those barriers are not disappearing. In many cases, they are growing.

Across regions, disciplines, and career stages, we consistently hear from people who feel isolated, under resourced, and uncertain about how to move forward in conservation. Early career professionals navigating unpaid labor and opaque hiring systems. Mid career practitioners facing burnout and instability. Researchers, storytellers, and organizers working without institutional backing. What they need is not inspiration alone. They need practical resources, trusted information, and a sense that they are not navigating this work alone.

This is where SEVENSEAS Media plays a distinct and increasingly necessary role.

By nature, our mission has always focused on conservationists themselves. On the people who make conservation happen. Our work centers on leveling the playing field, removing barriers to entry, and ensuring that individuals from underrepresented or historically excluded communities can access the same knowledge, opportunities, and networks as anyone else.

In 2025, we continued to strengthen SEVENSEAS Media as a piece of shared infrastructure for the conservation community. A place where information is free. Where opportunities are visible. Where voices are elevated based on insight rather than affiliation. Where people can build a lifelong conservation journey rather than navigating it alone.

The demand for this work continues to grow. In many ways, we are seeing needs emerge faster than organizations are able to respond. While we remain a small team, we are deeply committed to meeting those needs thoughtfully, responsibly, and in partnership with the community we serve.

Thank you for reading, contributing, sharing, and supporting this work. SEVENSEAS Media exists because of you, and because of a shared belief that conservation succeeds only when the people behind it are supported.

With gratitude and resolve,
Giacomo Abrusci

2025 at a Glance

By the Numbers

  • Community Reach:
  • Content and Resources:
  • Platform Growth and Infrastructure:
    • In 2025, SEVENSEAS Media completed a full website overhaul. The platform now looks and functions fundamentally differently than it did one year ago. While there are still refinements to be made, the new site has significantly improved usability, discoverability, and long term scalability.
    • We also developed and published a new guide outlining pathways for a lifelong conservation journey. This resource reflects years of listening to our community and aims to bring clarity to an often fragmented and opaque field. We actively invite feedback and collaboration on this guide and encourage readers to write to us directly at info@sevenseasmedia.org.
  • Community, Partnerships, and Leadership:
    • We also expanded our leadership and regional capacity with new local research and coordination in Thailand, including the hiring of Thanong (Junior) Aiamkhophueng, strengthening our ability to listen, learn, and engage more meaningfully across regions.
    • These partnerships are not transactional. They are built on trust, shared values, and a long term commitment to supporting people working in conservation.

Challenges & Opportunities Ahead

As we reflect on 2024, SEVENSEAS Media has made significant strides in ocean conservation, education, and engagement. However, like many independent environmental organizations, we continue to face key challenges that shape our path forward.

Challenges

  • Fundraising Limitations & Core Funding Needs – Securing sustainable funding remains one of our biggest hurdles. While we have strong engagement and a growing audience, finding core funding to support our operations, expand our reach, and scale our impact continues to be a challenge. Traditional grant models often favor direct conservation action, making it difficult for nonprofit media organizations to secure consistent financial support.
  • Need for More Quantitative Conservation Impact Data – While SEVENSEAS Media has successfully mobilized conservation professionals, volunteers, and the public, tracking and quantifying our real-world impact remains a priority. Strengthening our data collection on audience engagement, conservation outcomes, and content reach will allow us to demonstrate our effectiveness more clearly.

Opportunities

  • Expanding Advocacy for 30×30 Marine Protected Areas – As a leading voice in ocean conservation, we are committed to amplifying the global 30×30 initiative, advocating for the protection of 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030. Through strategic storytelling, partnerships, and digital campaigns, we will continue to push for meaningful policy changes and marine protections.
  • Strengthening Partnerships with Donors & Foundations – In 2025, we aim to deepen relationships with philanthropic foundations, corporate partners, and individual donors who share our vision for ocean conservation. Building stronger alliances will help us secure the resources needed to sustain and grow our work.
  • Growing the SEVENSEAS Media Platform – Storytelling remains one of the most powerful tools for conservation. By expanding our digital presence, publishing more diverse content, and increasing engagement through multimedia and social platforms, we can inspire a broader audience and drive greater impact.

Despite the challenges ahead, we remain optimistic and committed to our mission. With the support of our community, partners, and donors, we are confident that 2025 will be a year of growth, action, and renewed dedication to protecting our blue planet.
