The suggested $50 donation, and what it does

Posting is free and always will be. We ask for a suggested donation of $50 per listing.

Very few people make it, which is the honest reason it is now stated this plainly. SEVENSEAS has no paid advertising, no subscription fee, no paywall, and no institutional funder underwriting the jobs list. It is produced week after week and given away. Donations are what keep it running.

If you donate, your listing gets more than a standard post:

  • Featured placement in the Highlights section at the top of the newsletter, rather than sitting in the main list
  • Inclusion in Ocean, Environment, Science, our editor’s LinkedIn newsletter
  • A share across our social channels, where the conservation hiring audience is already following us

Reach the people who actually do this work

The SEVENSEAS Media ocean jobs list has been in circulation since 2004. It is, arguably, the largest and most active ocean conservation jobs list anywhere, and it remains free to post and free to read.

Every listing is published on our jobs board and goes out in our free weekly newsletters, which reach more than 50,000 subscribers. The website receives around 70,000 page views a month. We run two editions:

The ocean newsletter (Thursdays)

Marine, coastal and polar roles: fisheries, marine science, ocean policy, reef and mangrove work, vessel operations, blue economy, marine protected areas.

The environmental newsletter (Tuesdays)

Land, freshwater, biodiversity, climate, energy and cross-sector environmental roles.

We added the environmental edition because the boundary was never real. Climate science shapes ocean science. Agriculture and freshwater management decide what reaches the coast. Clean energy siting is now an ocean question as often as a land one. Readers were already moving between those fields, so the list moved with them. Between the two editions this is the most comprehensive conservation jobs list we know of.

Our readers are marine scientists, conservation practitioners, NGO and foundation staff, government and agency people, university researchers, and the students coming up behind them. If you are hiring into this sector, they are the people you want to reach.

Send us your listing

You do not need to fill in a form or reformat anything. Send whatever you already have and we will take care of the rest. Any one of these is enough:

A link

If your posting is on a public page that does not sit behind a login, a career-portal search, or an application wall, the link on its own is fine.

A copy and paste

Paste the full text of the posting straight into the email. Formatting does not matter.

A PDF or an attachment

Send it as it is.

Please include, somewhere in the email:

  • Job title
  • Organisation name
  • Location, written as city and country, or Remote, or Hybrid
  • How to apply, meaning an application link or an email address
  • Application deadline, if there is one

Helpful but optional: salary or salary range, contract type and duration, and your logo as an image file. If salary is disclosed we will publish it, and listings that show a salary get more clicks. If you would like the role listed under particular job categories, say so; otherwise we will categorise it for you.

If your posting is behind a portal we cannot read, we will ask you for the text. That is the one case where we need something more from you.

Timing

The newsletters take a long time to put together, and most of that work happens at the beginning of the week. Depending on when your listing reaches us, it will usually appear in the following week’s edition. The listing goes onto the jobs board as soon as we have processed it, so it is live and findable in the meantime. We publish every week of the year, apart from a short break at the end of August and another at the end of December.

Sponsor the jobs list

For twenty-two years this list has been a piece of infrastructure for the ocean conservation community. People find their first field position through it, and their next one, and the one after that. Hiring managers use it because the applicants who arrive through it already know what the work involves.

That is a specific and difficult audience to reach, and it is not one you can buy at scale anywhere else. There is no general-interest equivalent. Conventional job advertising will put your role in front of a hundred thousand people who will never apply. This puts it in front of the few thousand who might.

We are looking for organisations, companies, foundations and universities who want to sponsor the jobs list, the newsletters or the website. Sponsorship keeps the resource free for the people who need it most, which is usually early-career applicants, and it puts your name in front of the sector every week rather than once.
