Guardians of the Caribbean: The Manta Caribbean Project

In the heart of the Mexican Caribbean, a team of passionate researchers and conservationists is working to protect two of the ocean’s most majestic and threatened species: the Atlantic Manta Ray and the Atlantic Pigmy Devil Ray. The Manta Caribbean Project is a long-term research and conservation initiative dedicated to studying, monitoring, and safeguarding manta populations in this vital marine ecosystem. Furthermore, we have been an affiliate project of The Manta Trust for the last ten years.
A Mission to Protect Giants
Manta rays are among the ocean’s most iconic species, known for their intelligence, curiosity, and graceful movements. Yet, despite their size and beauty, they face increasing threats from fishing pressures, habitat degradation, and climate change. The Manta Caribbean Project was established to address these challenges through science, education, and community collaboration.
Science Beneath the Surface
Through ongoing fieldwork, our team conducts photo-identification, drone monitoring, and ecological studies to understand manta behavior, population dynamics, and habitat use across the Caribbean region. Each sighting contributes valuable data to identify individual mantas, such as “Debbie,” a manta first seen in 2017 and later re-sighted in 2020, living proof of the importance of long-term monitoring.
These research efforts are vital to develop conservation strategies that ensure mantas can thrive for generations to come.
Empowering Conservation Through Education
The project also places a strong emphasis on education and community involvement. Local workshops, school visits, and public outreach campaigns help raise awareness about the importance of mantas and marine ecosystems. Our educational programs help to inspire children to become future ocean advocates.
A Network of Support
Behind the Manta Caribbean Project is a diverse team, predominantly women, united by their commitment to ocean conservation. By collaborating with national and international partners, we aim to strengthen marine protection policies and promote responsible tourism practices that respect wildlife and support sustainable livelihoods.
How You Can Help
Every contribution, from raising awareness among your friends and family about this species to volunteering or purchasing our conservation-themed T-shirts through Adopt a Manta Ray, supports field research and educational initiatives. Together, we can ensure that manta rays continue to glide through the turquoise waters of the Caribbean for many years to come.
Join Our Marine Training Program: We invite conservation enthusiasts and students to participate in field operations. Two-week to one-month experiences available year-round, plus three-month summer internships. Learn more: mantacaribbeanproject.org/volunteer
