The Nature Conservancy is hiring a Wyoming Director of External Affairs to lead the Wyoming Business Unit external affairs functions, implement BU policy strategies, and provide guidance to program directors and staff on TNC conservation policy priorities. The role works with government and business entities to advance the BU mission in support of conservation policy and climate action, and on behalf of TNC North America Policy and Government Relations policy goals. The Director monitors legislative, administrative, and corporate initiatives that can affect the Wyoming BU conservation programs, and maintains regular contact with local, county, state, federal, and country-level officials, agencies, and corporate representatives.
Core responsibilities include representing TNC conservation policy priorities (including participating in legislative and regulatory rule-making processes), monitoring and analysing state and federal legislation affecting TNC priorities, building and maintaining relationships with elected officials, agency leaders, business associations, and non-profit partners, and participating in legislative and regulatory analyses and forums. The Director builds partnerships with diverse public and private stakeholders, fosters internal coordination across departments to unify messaging and policy positions, designs and executes outreach strategies targeting policymakers, funders, media, and the public, supports the development of private and public funding proposals, and serves on the BU Senior Leadership Team.
The work involves frequent travel across Wyoming and nationally, evening and weekend hours, and may take place in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult or hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Required qualifications include a Bachelor degree in political science, environmental policy, management, or a related field, plus 6 years of government relations or corporate sector experience. Candidates need supervisory experience, demonstrated experience developing and managing multiple projects, experience in partnership development with non-profits, community groups, and government agencies, lobbying experience with local, state, and federal legislators, and fluency in English.
Desired qualifications include fundraising experience (donor prospecting and cultivation), multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience, a Master degree with 7 to 10 years experience in conservation practice or equivalent, proven experience influencing and implementing conservation policy, knowledge of biodiversity information systems, political savvy, proficiency in policy and regulations relevant to areas of strategic focus, and experience developing and executing strategies for a large, matrixed non-profit. The position requires a valid driver license and compliance with TNC Auto Safety Program.
