Description

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is hiring a Wildlife Biologist 3 in Dillingham, Alaska (PCN 112069), paying $3,957.60 biweekly with applications due June 8, 2026.

The Division of Wildlife Conservation works to conserve and enhance Alaska’s wildlife and habitats and provide for a wide range of public uses and benefits. The Division supports opportunities to view, hunt, and trap wildlife while building public knowledge and ethical engagement with Alaska’s wildlife and management.

This position manages all terrestrial wildlife across approximately 20,000 square miles of the Northern Bristol Bay area (Game Management Unit 17), including oversight of the Mulchatna caribou herd, administration of hunting and trapping seasons, response to nuisance wildlife and public safety issues, and expert advice on wildlife populations and conservation management. The role supervises one Wildlife Biologist 2 and one Program Technician, with a shared Wildlife Biologist II in Dillingham assisting the incumbent.


Responsibilities

  • Manage all terrestrial wildlife in Game Management Unit 17, including the Mulchatna caribou herd.
  • Design and implement wildlife management programs for large game populations including conducting field work.
  • Administer hunting and trapping seasons; serve as the contact for licenses, permits, and harvest information primarily on bear, caribou, and moose.
  • Capture, immobilize, and perform physical examinations of large mammal species.
  • Conduct data analysis, population modeling, and sustainable harvest goal setting; produce data summaries and technical reports.
  • Conduct wildlife surveys and investigations across the management area.
  • Manage an active predation control program supporting a critical caribou population.
  • Address public and stakeholder inquiries on complex issues and regulations through oral and written communication.
  • Supervise one Wildlife Biologist 2 and one Program Technician.
  • Travel frequently within the management area and state.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.
  • One year of full-performance professional biologist experience, met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to use firearms; ability to fly in small fixed-wing and rotor aircraft in mountainous environments.
  • Willingness to work occasional nights and weekends.
  • No misdemeanor convictions for domestic violence (per federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Federal (FAA) Pilot’s License and State of Alaska ADF&G-DWC Aviation Manual certification.
  • Certified Wildlife Biologist credential from a professional society.
  • Animal capture and immobilization certification; Animal Welfare training and certification.
  • State of Alaska Peace Officer credential.
  • Substitution available: bachelor’s degree with at least 24 semester hours in biology or related field (16 upper-division) plus 12 semester hours combining chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

  • Full-time supervisory position; Range 18 bargaining unit.
