6+ Week Volunteer Programme in Marine Conservation

Marine Conservation Philippines

Marine Conservation Philippines (MCP) is recruiting volunteers for its 6+ Week Marine Conservation Volunteer Programme based in Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental, Philippines. MCP is a marine research, conservation and education NGO working in close partnership with local communities, the Philippine government and academic partners to support marine conservation in the Philippines’ Central Visayas region.

The Marine Conservation Volunteer Programme combines SCUBA training and certification, field-based marine research, community engagement and direct conservation work. Volunteers participate in MCP’s ongoing programmes, which include coral reef monitoring, fish and invertebrate surveys, marine protected area (MPA) support, community engagement, citizen science and education and outreach with local schools and communities.

Programme components include PADI Open Water (or higher) SCUBA training and certification; training in marine research methods including fish, coral and macro-invertebrate surveys; participation in ongoing research and conservation projects including coral reef monitoring, MPA work and citizen science; community engagement work with local fishing communities and schools; and the opportunity to contribute to long-term datasets and conservation outcomes in the Central Visayas.

The programme is participant-funded, with weekly fees of $500 covering accommodation, food, SCUBA training and project participation. Minimum commitment is 6 weeks. Required qualifications include strong interest in marine conservation, the ability to learn to dive (or existing certification), willingness to live in shared volunteer accommodation in a remote field station, the ability to commit to the minimum 6-week duration, and a commitment to MCP’s community-based approach to marine conservation.

Applications and enquiries should be directed via the MCP website. Suitable for early-career professionals, gap-year students, career-changers and divers seeking a structured immersion in community-based marine conservation.
