Description

Casey Trees is hiring an Urban Forestry Manager in Washington, DC, at $95,000 to $110,000 per year.

Casey Trees works to restore, enhance, and protect the tree canopy of the nation’s capital. The organization plants more than 6,500 trees each year grown at its own nursery, cares for and maintains those trees, conserves greenspace, conducts school and community-based youth STEM programming, and advocates for stronger tree-protection policies and laws across the DC Metro area. Casey Trees emphasizes innovative solutions and partnerships that advance tree canopy outcomes for the communities it serves.

The Urban Forestry Manager leads Casey Trees’ tree planting and maintenance programs across the Washington, DC region. The role manages a team of Urban Forestry Foremen, oversees residential and large parcel planting projects, tracks grant deliverables, and ensures compliance with urban forestry best practices. The role blends field operations understanding with administrative and strategic responsibility, working closely with internal teams and external partners and representing Casey Trees at community events.


Responsibilities

  • Manage and mentor a team of Urban Forestry Foremen and curate the weekly work schedule.
  • Ensure adherence to organizational policies including attendance, conduct, customer service, volunteer engagement, and budgets.
  • Conduct periodic performance appraisals; onboard new staff and develop in-house training sessions.
  • Guide the comprehensive design approach to tree planting installations.
  • Review residential and large parcel tree planting designs and work orders for organizational standards.
  • Manage, track, and coordinate grant deliverables for short-term and multi-year projects with the Senior Program Manager.
  • Distribute and schedule tree planting consultations among Urban Forestry Foremen; conduct consultations as needed.
  • Work with the Senior Program Manager and Farm Director on tree procurement.
  • Collaborate with the Tree Operations Director on partner relationships across the DC metropolitan region.
  • Manage contracts with outside parties and ensure compliance with Casey Trees’ planting best practices.
  • Coordinate with the GIS Manager to facilitate public right-of-way plantings.
  • Stay current on arboriculture and urban forestry best practices and emerging trends.
  • Provide advice and technical assistance to support classes, events, public inquiries, and community outreach.
  • Attend community meetings and support tree planting events, programs, and activities involving volunteers.
  • Support Casey Trees’ Accredited Land Trust stewardship, green infrastructure planning, and conservation site management.
  • Assist in tree installation and maintenance as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in arboriculture, horticulture, urban forestry, landscape management, or related field, plus 3 or more years of experience; equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
  • 2 or more years of demonstrated project management experience.
  • ISA Certified Arborist credential required upon hire or within the first year of employment.
  • Experience supervising, managing, and mentoring staff of diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Proficiency with Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS), Salesforce, Eventbrite, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); willingness to learn new programs.
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and willingness and ability to drive pickup truck and trailer.
  • Ability to establish, track, and meet deadlines.
  • Professional demeanor; superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds (occasionally up to 80 pounds) and work outdoors year-round in heat, cold, and inclement weather.

Additional Notes

  • Full-time exempt position. Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours when needed.
  • Travel is primarily local to the DC metro area with occasional travel to Casey Tree Farm in Berryville, Virginia.
  • Out-of-area travel for training, seminars, or events may require overnight stays.
