Sustainable Ocean and Reefs Inc. (SOAR) Fall 2026 Internship
Sustainable Ocean and Reefs Inc. (SOAR)
Sustainable Ocean and Reefs Inc. (SOAR) is offering a Fall 2026 internship in the Florida Keys, based in Marathon, for a single intern focused on invertebrate reef grazers and reef restoration, alongside experience in research and development. The internship begins in September and runs for four to six months depending on the candidate’s preference. It offers substantial one-to-one time with SOAR’s Founder and Director, direct research experience, the potential for an independent project, and opportunities to expand professional networks. The placement combines land-based and in-water work, and the intern reports directly to SOAR’s Director.
Designed as an introduction to invertebrate reef grazers in coral reef restoration and research and development, the internship gives the intern exposure to the first in-situ invertebrate reef grazer nursery in the Tropical Western Atlantic and a role in SOAR’s various projects. Topics covered include species identification, nursery setup and development, data analysis and management, social media and science communications, novel research and experimental design, grant writing and reporting, and grazer restoration techniques. Intended learning outcomes include a basic understanding of Diadema antillarum biology, reproduction, and coral reef ecology, the ability to carry out grazer nursery maintenance, advanced experience in social media communications and in grant writing and reporting, an independent experimental design and research project at master’s level, direct collaboration with the University of Florida and with Florida’s main coral restoration practitioners and Mission: Iconic Reefs, and hands-on boating experience.
The intern works as a 1099 contractor for Sustainable Ocean and Reefs and must sign a liability waiver to take part in in-water activities. Applications are made through an online form.
