Description

The Sonoma Resource Conservation District is hiring a Staff Accountant in Santa Rosa, California, at $33.89 to $40.50 per hour, with applications due June 15, 2026.

The Sonoma RCD is a non-regulatory local government entity that manages soil, water, fish, and wildlife resources for conservation across 85 percent of Sonoma County, including portions of the Russian River, Petaluma River, Sonoma Creek, Stemple Creek, and Gualala River watersheds. In operation since the 1940s, the RCD operates with a $4.5 million budget, governed by a seven-director board and an interdisciplinary team of 18 professionals across agriculture, forestry, water resources, and community engagement programs.

The Staff Accountant reports to the Finance Manager and supports accounts payable and receivable, payroll processing, grant administration, and financial compliance. This role plays a critical part in maintaining sound financial management of grant and contract awards and supporting effective program delivery.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare all monthly and quarterly grant and contract invoices and financial compliance reports.
  • Ensure timely submission and collection of receivables.
  • Prepare bank deposits.
  • Reconcile financial statements to budgets and provide program staff with monthly budget vs. actual reporting.
  • Serve as point of contact for staff and funders regarding financial management of awards.
  • Work with program staff on budget development, amendments, and closeouts.
  • Monitor grants and contracts for compliance with funder guidelines and matching funds requirements.
  • Enter invoices, record credit card transactions, and perform check runs.
  • Manage vendor files including W-9 information and annual 1099 filings.
  • Assist with semi-monthly payroll processing.
  • Assist with expense allocations, monthly close, adjusting journal entries, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Participate in improvement of internal controls, fiscal policies, and procedures.
  • Support the annual budget process and financial audit.
  • Assist with procurement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 2 to 3 years of professional accounting experience.
  • Working knowledge of fund accounting and GAAP.
  • Highly proficient in QuickBooks Desktop and MS Office with strong Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated budgeting experience.
  • Ability to interpret, implement, and communicate complex laws, regulations, and policies of diverse funding sources.
  • Strong analytical and reconciliation skills.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Self-starter with high dependability and attention to detail.
  • Ability to juggle competing priorities and adapt to organizational needs.
  • Passionate about conservation of natural resources.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Government or nonprofit accounting experience.
  • Intermediate Airtable experience.

Additional Notes

  • Full-time, non-exempt (1.0 FTE).
  • Main office in Santa Rosa with option for partial remote work after a 90-day introductory period.
  • Estimated start: July or August 2026.
