Senior Trainer, Pinnipeds
Georgia Aquarium
Georgia Aquarium is hiring a Senior Trainer for the Sea Lion Training department to support the care, training, and welfare of pinnipeds at its Atlanta facility. The Senior Trainer reports to the Associate Curator of Animal Training, Pinnipeds and works closely with veterinarians, curators, and education staff to deliver high-quality animal husbandry, training, and guest experiences.
The Senior Trainer leads daily training sessions and husbandry routines for pinnipeds, including California sea lions and harbour seals; supports voluntary medical training and reproductive monitoring; designs and implements behavioural enrichment programmes; participates in research projects; and mentors junior trainers and interns. The role contributes to public presentations, behind-the-scenes encounters, and educational programmes that connect guests with marine mammals and the threats facing them in the wild.
Additional responsibilities include maintaining detailed training and behaviour records, supporting safety protocols for staff and animals, participating in animal moves and transports as needed, and contributing to the development of new exhibits, programmes, and partnerships. The Senior Trainer collaborates with the broader Animal Care team to advance institutional priorities including animal welfare science, accredited best practices, and conservation outreach.
Required qualifications include several years of professional animal training experience with marine mammals (ideally pinnipeds), demonstrated proficiency in operant conditioning and positive reinforcement training, the ability to swim and work in and around water, a willingness to work weekends, holidays, and variable hours, and the ability to lift and carry heavy items. SCUBA certification, public speaking experience, and prior leadership or mentoring experience are desirable. The position is full-time, non-exempt, and based on-site at the Atlanta facility.
