Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (Sussex IFCA)

Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (Sussex IFCA) is recruiting two Senior Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Officers (IFCOs) in the Conservation and Research team, based in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. Sussex IFCA is responsible for the sustainable management of sea fisheries and the protection and conservation of the marine environment in the Sussex IFCA district, which extends along the Sussex coast from Camber to Chichester Harbour and out to 6 nautical miles.

The Senior IFCO (Conservation and Research) leads on the Authority’s conservation and research work, including evidence collection, environmental impact assessments, Marine Protected Area management, and habitat and species monitoring. The role works closely with other Senior IFCOs, the Head of Conservation and Research, and partners including Natural England, the Environment Agency, the Marine Management Organisation, neighbouring IFCAs, academic institutions, NGOs and the fishing industry.

Responsibilities include leading and delivering elements of the Authority’s evidence and research programme; conducting fisheries and environmental surveys at sea and in the intertidal zone; managing data collection, analysis and reporting; supporting Marine Protected Area management including assessments under the Habitats Regulations and the implementation of byelaws; providing scientific and technical advice to the Authority’s committees, members and stakeholders; supporting stakeholder engagement including with the fishing industry and NGOs; and contributing to the Authority’s strategic planning, business development and partnership working.

One of the two posts is a 12-month fixed-term contract. Required qualifications include a relevant degree (marine biology, fisheries science, marine ecology or related); significant experience in fisheries or marine conservation research; demonstrated experience in fieldwork at sea or in the intertidal zone; strong written and verbal communication skills including report writing and stakeholder engagement; the ability to work in a team and lead specific work areas; and a clean driving licence.
