Senior Director, Climate and Rights (12-month position)

Website Greenpeace USA

Greenpeace USA is hiring a Senior Director, Climate and Rights for a 12-month contract. The role responds to a moment when climate impacts are accelerating, democratic institutions and civic rights are under sustained attack, and corporate power is undermining both environmental progress and people ability to shape the future. The Senior Director leads and integrates Greenpeace USA climate and democracy campaign portfolios as a unified, coordinated body of work, on the premise that a liveable climate depends on a functioning democracy, protected civic space, and the right to dissent.

The position reports to the Chief Program Officer and directly manages two senior leaders: the Democracy Campaign Director and the Climate Campaign Director. It works in close partnership with the Senior Director of Oceans and other senior program leaders across the Program, Legal, Communications, Engagement, and Development teams.

Responsibilities cover five main areas. Strategic leadership and integration: providing direction for the integrated Climate and Rights portfolio in partnership with the Chief Program Officer and Executive Director, ensuring climate and democracy strategies are aligned and mutually reinforcing, translating organisational strategy and risk appetite into executable campaign direction, providing leadership for work to defend speech and peaceful protest against SLAPP lawsuits, and partnering with Development on fundraising narratives, funder briefings, and revenue and growth opportunities. Management of senior campaign leaders: directly managing and supporting the Climate Campaign Director and Democracy Campaign Director as coach, thought partner, and accountability point, ensuring teams are aligned on strategy and ways of working, supporting tradeoff decisions in a high-risk environment, and ensuring best practices in budget management and reporting.

Campaign cohesion and organisational alignment: ensuring campaign strategies are integrated across legal, communications, engagement, fundraising, and operations, partnering with the Senior Director of Oceans on program priorities and shared narratives. People-centred leadership and culture: modelling Greenpeace USA values of justice, nonviolence, and people-powered change, supporting healthy and sustainable workloads, and championing inclusive leadership. External representation and movement leadership: representing Greenpeace USA externally with partners, allies, funders, and movement leaders, serving as a key connector to program leaders across the global Greenpeace network.

Required experience includes 10 or more years of senior leadership in climate, democracy, human rights, or movement-based organizations; demonstrated experience managing senior leaders or directors and leading complex multi-issue portfolios; cross-functional experience across campaigns, legal, communications, engagement, and development; proven ability to lead collaboratively, manage risk, and operate amid uncertainty; in-depth knowledge of US politics, culture, social movements, and socio-economic environment; experience developing and managing campaign budgets and high-priority projects; strong strategic campaigning experience including non-violent direct action; and a proven track record in public and supporter engagement, mobilization, and organizing.
