Research Position – Distributed Acoustic Sensing for Offshore Environmental Monitoring

Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC)

The Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is recruiting a Researcher for a position focused on Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) for offshore environmental monitoring. ICM-CSIC is one of Europe’s leading marine science institutes, based in Barcelona, with research programmes across marine biology, oceanography, marine geosciences, marine technology and ocean health. The Institute is engaged in major international research programmes and operates a sophisticated marine technology infrastructure.

Distributed Acoustic Sensing is a rapidly emerging technology that uses fibre optic cables as continuous arrays of acoustic sensors, with significant potential applications in offshore environmental monitoring including marine seismology, underwater soundscapes, marine mammal monitoring, oceanographic measurements and offshore infrastructure monitoring. The successful candidate will lead and contribute to ICM’s research programme on DAS, working at the intersection of marine geophysics, marine acoustics and applied marine technology.

Responsibilities include leading and contributing to research projects on the application of DAS technology for offshore environmental monitoring; designing and conducting DAS measurement campaigns at sea; analysing DAS data and integrating with other oceanographic, geophysical and ecological data; developing new processing and interpretation methods; publishing in peer-reviewed journals; collaborating with national and international partners; supervising graduate students and early-career researchers; and contributing to ICM’s broader research strategy and team culture.

Required qualifications include a PhD in geophysics, marine geophysics, marine acoustics, physical oceanography, marine technology or related field; a strong record of research in a relevant area; experience with fibre optic sensing technologies, marine seismology, marine acoustics or related; experience with large-scale time-series data analysis; strong scientific writing and communication skills; experience with international collaborations; and commitment to applied marine science.

Applications should be submitted via the ICM website with a CV and covering letter. Salary is according to CSIC pay scales.
