Description

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is hiring a permanent full-time Ranger (Marine) in Kununurra, Western Australia, paying AUD $69,333 to $75,624 plus loadings and allowances, with applications closing midday Friday 5 June 2026.

DBCA is one of Western Australia’s largest state government agencies, providing career opportunities in biodiversity conservation, park and natural resource management. The Kimberley Region manages over 3.8 million hectares of land and water, including Purnululu, Windjana Gorge, Geikie Gorge, and Tunnel Creek national parks, alongside world-class marine experiences such as Horizontal Falls and Montgomery Reef.

Under the direction of the Senior Ranger (Marine), this position carries out operational activities and field logistics within the North Kimberley Marine Park and island reserves across the East Kimberley District.


Responsibilities

  • Develop, supervise, and deliver programs for parks and visitor services and conservation, with a focus on marine park operations.
  • Manage visitor risk, liaise with commercial operators, and lead emergency response and mitigation works.
  • Facilitate delivery of research and monitoring programs as directed.
  • Conduct compliance patrols and maintain departmental vessels and operational equipment.
  • Skipper departmental vessels in the North Kimberley Marine Park and island reserves.
  • Develop and deliver education and interpretive programs.
  • Implement works programs consistent with departmental guidelines, policies, and management plans.

Requirements

  • Ability to implement operational plans and works programs for visitor management and natural resource management, with emphasis on marine and coastal environments.
  • Experience in vessel operations and logistics, including commanding vessels up to 12 metres in length.
  • Good interpersonal skills with experience in patrol and enforcement and liaising with the public, commercial tourism operators, community groups, Indigenous groups, and other government agencies.
  • Australian citizenship, New Zealand citizenship, or Australian permanent residency.
  • Current Working with Children Check, satisfactory National Police Check, and current Western Australian “C” class driver’s licence on commencement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate of Competency, Coxswain Class 1 (Near Coastal) or higher.

  • Permanent, full-time position based in Kununurra.
