Description
The Australian Institute of Marine Science is hiring a Postdoctoral Fellow in Crimson Snapper Biology and Stock Structure based in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, on a full-time three-year temporary appointment with an AIMS AOF Level 4 salary of AUD $100,862 to $110,957 plus 15.4 percent superannuation.
AIMS is Australia’s tropical marine science agency, a global leader in research on the Great Barrier Reef and Indo-Pacific marine ecosystems. The AIMS@CDU partnership extends AIMS research capacity through Charles Darwin University, supporting tropical northern Australia marine science.
The Postdoctoral Fellow improves understanding of Crimson Snapper stock structure and biology across northern Australia. Crimson Snapper is an important commercial and recreational species; the knowledge generated will underpin sustainable harvest and management of this resource. The project aligns with the AIMS Coastal Futures and Blue Economy themes.
Responsibilities
- Design and establish a collaborative research program advancing understanding of Crimson Snapper population structure, biology, and ecology across tropical Northern Australia.
- Lead and support studies on microchemistry and parasite-based stock discrimination techniques.
- Conduct studies on age, growth, and longevity of Crimson Snapper and other long-lived marine organisms.
- Coordinate strategic partnerships with fisheries agencies, universities, industry, and other research collaborators.
- Contribute to the AIMS Coastal Futures theme by supporting healthy ecosystems, community wellbeing, and livelihoods.
- Contribute to the AIMS Blue Economy theme by fostering an inclusive and sustainable blue economy.
Requirements
- PhD in Marine Biology or Ecology with a specialisation in fish ecology.
- Demonstrated track record of scientific achievements including publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstrated skills in experimental design, field and laboratory data collection, and statistical analysis.
- Strong communication skills and team-player orientation with experience managing the full project lifecycle.
- Intellectual curiosity and the ability to work independently while contributing ideas within a broader project framework.
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills with advanced knowledge in spatial ecology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Research and fieldwork experience with fisheries in Northern Australia.
- Experience with otolith microchemistry, parasite assemblage analysis, or comparable stock discrimination methods.
Additional Notes
- Located in Darwin, Northern Territory, with travel across northern Australia for field work.
- 9-day fortnight schedule with a long weekend each fortnight.
- Flexible work arrangements considered including hybrid working where suitable.
- Non-Australian citizens must hold a valid working visa for the full term of the appointment.
