The Marine Mammal Center is recruiting a Pathology and Diagnostic Apprentice to support the Center’s veterinary, pathology and diagnostic work. The Marine Mammal Center is the world’s largest marine mammal hospital and a global leader in marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation, research and education, based in Sausalito, California. The Center’s veterinary and pathology programmes investigate the health of marine mammals along the California coast and contribute to global understanding of marine mammal disease, ecosystem health and conservation.
The Pathology and Diagnostic Apprenticeship is a structured training position that provides hands-on experience in marine mammal pathology and diagnostics. The Apprentice supports the Center’s veterinary, pathology and diagnostic teams in necropsy, histopathology, sample collection and processing, diagnostic laboratory work, data management and applied research. The apprenticeship is designed for early-career professionals or recent graduates considering further training or careers in veterinary pathology, wildlife pathology, marine mammal health or applied marine science.
Responsibilities include supporting necropsies of marine mammals (pinnipeds and cetaceans) recovered along the California coast; supporting the collection, processing and laboratory analysis of pathology samples; supporting diagnostic laboratory work including histopathology, microbiology and parasitology; supporting data management and records; contributing to applied research projects and publications as appropriate; and participating in the Center’s broader veterinary, pathology and educational programmes.
Required qualifications include a relevant degree (biology, marine biology, veterinary technology, animal science or related); strong interest in pathology, diagnostics, marine mammal health or wildlife health; experience with laboratory work or veterinary technical work is desirable; strong attention to detail; the ability to work with sometimes-graphic biological samples and necropsy material; the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team; and a commitment to the Marine Mammal Center’s mission.
