Description
The Pacific Community (SPC) is hiring a Pacific Climate and Clean Air Coalition Coordinator in Suva, Fiji, at FJD 7,412 to 9,265 per month, with applications due June 14, 2026.
The Pacific Community is the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific region, supporting development since 1947. SPC is owned and governed by its 27 country and territory members and works across more than 25 sectors. The Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Programme (CCES) strengthens and streamlines SPC’s climate change initiatives, providing leadership across SPC’s climate change and environmental sustainability actions.
The Pacific Climate and Clean Air Coordinator will coordinate Short Lived Climate Pollutant (SLCP) mitigation activities at country and regional levels, contributing technical expertise to the Regional Pacific Nationally Determined Contributions Hub (the NDC Hub). The Coordinator will facilitate SLCP work across agriculture, waste, cooling, transport, and energy, strengthen synergies between SLCP-relevant teams within SPC, and support engagement, ambition, and cooperation of national and regional partners.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate active synergies and collaboration with SPC technical divisions and PCREEE on SLCP mitigation priorities to strengthen regional delivery through SPC and the Regional Pacific NDC Hub.
- Assist countries in identifying gaps and needs to enhance mitigation targets, promoting inter-ministerial coordination.
- Coordinate with NDC Hub focal points and stakeholders to gather data and insights for project development.
- Ensure delivery of workshops and trainings on climate and clean air across SLCP sectors.
- Align with the NDC Hub workplan and country development priorities.
- Liaise with key partners to deliver training and workshops in response to identified needs.
- Increase awareness of Pacific Island countries on SLCP issues and co-benefits of action.
- Collate and develop Pacific SIDS-appropriate resources and knowledge materials on SLCPs.
- Match SLCP mitigation benefits with country priorities, including adaptation and sustainable development.
- Identify sources of funding for SLCP-relevant activities.
- Matchmake country requests with development partners and external funders.
- Support country access to CCAC capacity-building resources and elevate Pacific priorities through CCAC networks.
- Identify and track SLCP-relevant existing projects in the Pacific region to build a portfolio.
- Contribute to the development of a coordinated regional SLCP programme or climate and clean air strategy.
- Support advocacy for fast climate action through SLCP reductions in regional convenings.
- Coordinate Pacific SIDS advocacy on SLCP action in Regional Convenings.
- Work with PSIDS to develop advocacy resources linking SLCP issues to climate and sustainable development priorities.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject in climate science, environmental science, natural science (physics, chemistry), air quality, atmospheric physics, or equivalent body of knowledge and experience.
- 7 to 8 years of experience relevant to climate change, air pollution, sustainable development, or environment and health, preferably within the Pacific region.
- Practical experience in climate change mitigation project development, design, or policy implementation, particularly related to country NDCs and short-lived climate pollutants.
- Experience in day-to-day engagement with government ministries and agencies.
- Experience engaging private sector, NGOs, and development partners.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and advocate on climate change and sustainable development and to build partnerships.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills relating to SLCP mitigation sectors (energy, cooling, transport, agriculture, waste).
- Experience organising consultations, validation meetings, workshops, and capacity-building events.
- Excellent English communication skills (oral and written); working knowledge of French an advantage.
- Ability to work in a multicultural, inclusive, and equitable environment.
Additional Notes
- Suva-based position; attractive expatriate package.
- Contract duration until September 30, 2029, subject to renewal depending on funding and performance.
- Band 9 position; starting salary range of 2,399 to 2,998 SDR per month (approximately USD 3,214 to 4,018, EUR 2,900 to 3,625).
- Housing allowance of FJD 1,500 to 5,200 per month, plus establishment and repatriation grant, removal expenses, airfares, home leave, health/life/disability insurances, and education allowances for eligible employees and dependents.
- 25 working days annual leave plus other leave types; access to SPC’s Provident Fund (8 percent employee contribution, 10 percent SPC contribution).
- SPC working languages: English and French.
- Remuneration for expatriate SPC staff in Fiji is not subject to Fiji income tax; Fiji nationals are.
