Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is hiring an Oceanographic Data Systems Specialist on a full-time basis at its Woods Hole, Massachusetts site. The role sits within the Clark Laboratory Computing and Information Services (CIS) group and supports the Information Services Division, which manages computer and information systems organisation-wide and provides project oversight and technical support for WHOI’s research vessel program.

The Data Systems Specialist works with ship-based science groups and Marine Operations stakeholders to support and maintain shipboard scientific computer systems, helping science parties collect, manage, and document scientific data. The role manages the Shipboard Scientific Services Group fleet of data acquisition computers and other shipboard IT systems including networking and storage. The position requires roughly five to seven sea days every six to eight weeks aboard WHOI-operated vessels (including R/V Atlantis, R/V Neil Armstrong, and R/V Tioga). The Specialist also contributes to long-term data system planning for WHOI’s research vessel program.

Day-to-day responsibilities include providing daily, in-person, and remote help-desk support to seagoing science parties for scientific data acquisition, processing, and management; helping deploy, configure, and maintain shipboard data systems and oversee the Shipboard Scientific Services Group computer fleet of approximately 250 computers; troubleshooting data acquisition or processing issues across multi-disciplinary scientific instruments and computer systems; and assisting with delivery and data quality control of scientific data sets that the program archives. The role also includes recommending new and improved IT-based approaches and infrastructure, supporting and improving software systems used by shipboard scientific groups, and supporting data acquisition systems for scientific instruments. Some support to land-based IT systems within the Information Services Division may also be required.

Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related discipline; a minimum of five years of full-time work experience supporting computer systems and data acquisition systems, ideally in an environmental or oceanographic research setting; significant familiarity with multiple operating systems including Linux, Mac OSX, and Windows; familiarity with Apple/Mac end-user systems and standard application software such as Microsoft Office; knowledge of scientific data acquisition and processing on Linux platforms; demonstrated ability to manage relational database engines such as Postgres and MySQL; demonstrated coding ability in shell and Python; experience with disk/file system management on networked file servers; and experience with cloud-based storage and computational resources.
