Northwoods Prescribed Fire Module Lead
Website The Nature Conservancy (TNC)
The Nature Conservancy is hiring a Northwoods Prescribed Fire Module Lead to oversee a two-member module focused on prescribed fire and related stewardship activities in northern Minnesota. The role works in close coordination with local US Forest Service partners and is supervised by the Assistant Fire Manager. Day-to-day work includes preparing fire lines, timber stand improvement felling, building and burning piles, maintaining equipment, implementing prescribed burns, post-burn monitoring, training delivery, and other tasks. Additional preserve management duties may be assigned when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire, and out-of-state prescribed fire and wildfire details are expected from time to time.
As part of professional development, the Module Lead is responsible for staying current with new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain or grow professional fire qualifications. The role also involves building and maintaining relationships in the professional fire community and the local community where TNC works, including participation in Firewise and Fire Adapted Community activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and Tribes.
The Northwoods landscape is a complex of hemi-boreal, fire-dependent forests near the international border, with countless lakes and wetlands administered as wilderness, national and state forest lands, and several Tribal Reservations. The Module Lead serves as both a field supervisor and a partner liaison, interpreting the module work to continue building community awareness and support. The position requires heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and uneven terrain. The position is available as either a full-time permanent role or a full-time seasonal role. The successful candidate will be able to support prescribed and wildfire assignments out of state during off seasons.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma plus 1 year of training in fire operations, science-related fields, or land management; Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) with successful completion of the FFT1 task book per the TNC Fire Management Manual; Qualified FAL2 per the TNC Fire Management Manual; two or more seasons as a Senior Burn Crew Member or equivalent agency qualification; physical fitness standards as set by the local Fire Manager and TNC Fire Manual; experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment; and experience supervising staff or volunteers. Desired qualifications include two years of training in fire operations or related science fields, ICT5 qualification, CPR certification, and Single Resource Boss qualification. Valid driver license and compliance with TNC Auto Safety Program required.
