New England Marine Monitoring (NEMM) is hiring a Marine Scientist for a hybrid shoreside and at-sea position based in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with at-sea deployments ranging from one day to two weeks and an immediate start date.

This hybrid role combines dockside biosampling, electronic monitoring video review, and at-sea deployments for industry-funded scallop observing. New hires complete a fully compensated training program in Falmouth, Massachusetts. The role qualifies candidates for the NEMM Marine Data Acquisition Program, a 24-month fully paid cross-training career accelerator, and offers paths to management for highly motivated staff.
Responsibilities
- Conduct hands-on biosampling and collect weight data from commercial fishing vessels during dockside offloads.
- Review electronic monitoring footage to document catch composition and fishing activity.
- Assist with biological data collection and species identification across fisheries monitoring programs.
- Deploy at sea on industry-funded scallop trips ranging from one day to two weeks.
- Operate and support state-of-the-art marine electronic monitoring systems and AI-assisted fisheries software.
- Participate in fully compensated training in Falmouth, Massachusetts and contribute to the NEMM Marine Data Acquisition Program career accelerator.
Requirements
- College degree in biological sciences.
- 30 natural science credit hours, 1 math or statistics course, and 6 marine or fisheries credit hours.
- Current Basic First Aid and CPR certification from an in-person American Red Cross or American Heart Association course.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes long hours.
- Physically and mentally capable of the responsibilities of working at sea.
- Ability to pass all training requirements.
- Comfortable working with fish.
Preferred Qualifications
- Desire and motivation to work in a high-growth business.
- Interest in a fisheries technology career.
- Experience identifying Northeast Atlantic fish and marine mammals.
- Background in fisheries, marine science, biology, or scientific fieldwork.
- Prior experience working on boats.
- Current Industry Funded Scallop Observing certification (preference given to certified observers).
