The Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation is recruiting a Research Assistant for its Marine Ecology and Conservation Team, a paid position based at the Institute’s research bases on the islands of Samos and Lipsi in the eastern Aegean Sea. The Institute is looking for a dedicated, proactive and highly motivated marine scientist to support the coordination of the Marine Ecology Team, joining an international multidisciplinary team that carries out year-round scientific research and conservation action across one of the Mediterranean’s most important biodiversity hotspots. The role is well suited to someone seeking to develop a career in applied marine conservation while gaining extensive leadership and field research experience.

Main responsibilities include coordinating daily marine ecology fieldwork and surveys; leading and mentoring students and field researchers; ensuring high standards of scientific data collection and quality control; coordinating ecological monitoring programmes; contributing to habitat restoration projects, including Posidonia seagrass restoration; assisting with GIS analysis, data management, statistical analysis and scientific reporting; contributing to scientific publications and funding proposals; supporting the day-to-day operation of the research bases; and collaborating closely with the Institute’s multidisciplinary research teams.

Essential qualifications include an MSc in Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, Environmental Sciences or a related discipline; previous ecological field research experience; at least an Advanced Open Water diving licence; excellent organisational and communication skills; scientific writing experience; a demonstrated ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams; excellent English; and a valid driving licence. Desirable skills include experience supervising students or volunteers, GIS and spatial analysis, a rescue diving licence and scientific diving qualification, boat handling experience, and knowledge of Greek.
