Marine Ecology Adviser

NatureScot, Scotland’s nature agency, is recruiting two Marine Ecology Advisers to provide expert advice and support on marine ecology issues across Scotland’s seas. NatureScot is the public body responsible for safeguarding and improving Scotland’s natural heritage, including marine ecosystems, and provides advice to the Scottish Government, statutory partners, marine industries and the public.
The Marine Ecology Adviser provides specialist marine ecological advice across NatureScot’s casework, policy, research and stakeholder engagement work. Responsibilities include providing technical advice on marine developments (offshore wind, aquaculture, ports and harbours, cables and pipelines) and their potential impacts on marine ecology; contributing to marine planning, Marine Protected Area management and Habitats Regulations Appraisals; supporting research and evidence collection on marine species, habitats and ecosystems; engaging with Scottish Government, Marine Scotland, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, other statutory partners, industry, NGOs and academia; representing NatureScot in national and international fora; and supporting the agency’s strategy, policy and casework on marine biodiversity, climate change and the marine economy.
Two posts are available: one temporary position running to 31 March 2029, and one 6-month maternity cover. Required qualifications include a relevant degree (marine biology, marine ecology, oceanography or related); significant experience in marine ecology, ideally in a regulatory, advisory or research context; strong understanding of UK and Scottish marine policy and legislation; excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to translate complex technical information for diverse audiences; experience providing advice to decision-makers; and the ability to work collaboratively across teams and with external partners.
