LTE Wildlife Biologist, CWD Emphasis (Spooner)

The Wisconsin DNR is hiring two 20-hour-per-week limited-term positions headquartered out of the Spooner Service Center in Washburn County. Candidates may apply to both or only one, and a single applicant is eligible to hold both positions for a total of 40 hours per work week; successful candidates must be residents of the State of Wisconsin. The LTE Wildlife Biologist, CWD Emphasis focuses on public outreach and chronic wasting disease (CWD) sampling in the St Croix Area, working with DNR staff and conservation partners to facilitate the sampling of hunter-harvested deer in the assigned work area and serving as the lead coordinator for CWD outreach efforts. The position coordinates with other CWD Biologists in the District, the CWD sampling centre in Poynette, and local Wildlife Biologists and Technicians.

Duties are weighted as follows: coordinating the collection of deer tissue samples in the targeted surveillance area to provide hunter service testing, developing and maintaining a network of cooperative stations and self-service kiosks, providing cooperators with equipment and training, monitoring and ensuring quality control of data, and performing tissue extraction following all lab and safety protocols (60 percent); coordinating and participating in weekly and monthly planning sessions with local and District DNR staff and seeking to modify operations to reduce costs and create efficiencies (20 percent); procuring materials and supplies necessary for CWD sampling, determining needs for specialised equipment, writing purchase specifications and obtaining supplies by purchase or rental (15 percent); and completing core Wildlife Management Program duties as assigned (5 percent).
