Description
The Longleaf Alliance is hiring a Longleaf Forester, remote in southern Alabama or northwest Florida, at $60,000 to $65,000 per year, with applications due June 5, 2026.
The Longleaf Alliance is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing the restoration of the longleaf pine ecosystem across the Southeast. The organization works with landowners, partners, and agencies through technical assistance, training programs, and signature events like the Longleaf Academies and the Biennial Longleaf Conferences.
The Longleaf Forester plays a lead role in representing The Alliance to external audiences and delivering science-based technical assistance and training across the longleaf range. The position will be based in the central Gulf Coast region, with a focus on supporting landowners and managers, leading Longleaf Academies, and engaging the broader conservation community.
Responsibilities
- Provide timely, science-based responses to requests for assistance via phone, email, the question line, or site visits.
- Support landowner incentive programs that advance longleaf restoration.
- Take the lead on assigned Longleaf Academies or provide high-quality instruction in a supporting role.
- Develop and lead workshops and field days as components of grant deliverables, often across the nine-state range.
- Create training outreach materials including brochures, flyers, webinars, and articles for The Longleaf Leader and other publications.
- Demonstrate leadership and presentation skills at Longleaf Alliance events including the Biennial Longleaf Conferences.
- Independently manage timely reporting to funding organizations and track accomplishments.
- Collaborate with longleaf partner organizations across the Southeast.
Requirements
- College degree in forestry.
- At least 4 years of experience in longleaf pine ecosystem management and restoration.
- Demonstrated passion for the longleaf ecosystem and credibility in the Southeastern US conservation community.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated initiative, decision making, and meticulous organization.
- Proven ability to engage staff, partners, landowners, donors, agencies, and NGOs effectively.
- Computer fluency, especially in the full MS Office suite.
- Physical capacity for outdoor work in conditions ranging from ideal to arduous, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively across the longleaf range.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in a complementary field.
- Registered or certified forester credential.
- Working knowledge of longleaf forest management and ecology, training and teaching of natural resource conservation, and the broader role of forestland management in the Southeastern US.
- ArcGIS skills.
Additional Notes
- This is a remote role with an effective presence focused on southern Alabama or northwest Florida.
- Occasional evening and weekend activities are required, especially for advance planning and after-action reporting.
- Compensation includes paid time off, sick leave, Simple IRA, and a health care stipend.
