Local Operations Manager, Indonesia (Bekasi)
The Ocean Cleanup
The Ocean Cleanup is hiring a Local Operations Manager based in Bekasi Regency, Greater Jakarta Area, to lead day-to-day on-the-ground operations of Interceptor plastic-capture systems in Indonesia. The role is predominantly field-based at operation locations (not office-based), with frequent travel within the Greater Jakarta Area to project sites and at least one annual trip abroad to the Rotterdam headquarters. Start date is as soon as possible.
Reporting to the Cluster Operations Manager (Indonesia), the Local Operations Manager oversees Interceptor system operations, maintenance schedules, plastic handling, and logistics in the assigned cluster. Day-to-day work includes managing local operations staff and contractors, coordinating with municipal and provincial partners, ensuring health and safety standards on the river and at handling sites, supporting incident response, and preparing operational reports. The initial assignment may expand to Tangerang Regency and the City of Jakarta as the programme grows.
Additional responsibilities include managing supplier and service provider relationships, monitoring KPIs and budgets for the cluster, supporting recruitment and training of local team members, contributing to the continuous improvement of operational procedures, and collaborating closely with engineering, environmental, finance, and communications teams. The role provides extensive exposure to a high-impact field operation tackling river plastic at source in one of the world most affected regions.
Required qualifications include several years of operational management experience, ideally in logistics, manufacturing, environmental services, waste management, or related field-based environments; demonstrated team leadership and ability to manage contractors and partners; strong organisational and problem-solving skills; comfort working in field conditions and on rivers; fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and good working English; willingness to travel within Greater Jakarta and internationally; and residency permit or ability to work in Indonesia. A degree in engineering, operations management, environmental science, or a related field is desirable.
