The School for Field Studies (SFS) is recruiting a Lecturer in Tropical Coastal Ecology to join the faculty at the SFS Center for Tropical Island Biodiversity Studies in Bocas del Toro, Panama. SFS is one of the longest-established field-based education providers in environmental and conservation studies, operating field stations in seven countries and offering semester, summer and short-term programmes for undergraduate students from US and international institutions.
The Lecturer in Tropical Coastal Ecology teaches and leads field-based courses in tropical coastal and marine ecosystems for undergraduate students at the Bocas del Toro field station. The field station is on the Caribbean coast of Panama, within easy access to coral reefs, mangrove forests, seagrass beds and tropical rainforest, providing an exceptional setting for field-based teaching and research. Programmes focus on the ecology, conservation and management of tropical island biodiversity, including the marine, coastal and terrestrial ecosystems of Bocas del Toro.
Responsibilities include teaching and leading field-based courses on coastal and marine ecology, conservation biology, research methods and other related topics; supervising student directed research projects; contributing to the development and improvement of the academic programme; engaging with local communities, government agencies, NGOs, and scientific partners; supporting the field station’s day-to-day operations and student life; and contributing to SFS’s broader academic and institutional life.
Required qualifications include a PhD or terminal degree in marine ecology, marine biology, oceanography, conservation biology or a related field; demonstrated excellence in or strong potential for undergraduate teaching; experience leading field-based learning; an active research interest in tropical coastal ecosystems; cultural fluency including the ability to work effectively in Latin America; fluency in Spanish is highly desirable; the ability to live and work on a remote field station; and commitment to experiential education and SFS’s mission.
