WorldFish is an international research organisation working to transform aquatic food systems in order to reduce hunger, malnutrition and poverty. It collaborates with international, regional and national partners to co-develop and deliver scientific innovations, evidence for policy and knowledge, working towards equitable and inclusive impact for the millions of people who depend on fish and other aquatic foods for their livelihoods and nutrition.

The organisation is seeking an intern to support the Aquatic Animal Genetics Team at its headquarters in Penang. The successful candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team with expertise in quantitative genetics, molecular biology, aquaculture systems, aquatic animal health and dissemination programmes.

Responsibilities include supporting local staff in the collection of biological samples where necessary, running DNA extractions and quantification, preparing PCR and other molecular lab tests, troubleshooting and developing PCR and qPCR protocols for specific pathogens, keeping records of all experiments in a dedicated laboratory book, assisting with inventory and maintenance of the lab facility, assisting with experimental work and data collection during experiments, supporting sampling activities for genetic and health surveillance programmes, assisting in maintaining hygiene and biosecurity practices at the facility, and writing a short report summarising the work conducted during the internship.

Candidates will either have obtained, or currently be working towards, a Bachelor of Science or higher degree in fisheries and aquaculture or a related field. The role calls for excellent written and verbal communication in English, strong organisational skills, the ability to work effectively in a team, willingness to work in both laboratory and hatchery environments and sometimes under field conditions, and the ability to record, organise and enter data accurately using Excel or similar tools.

The internship offers practical experience in an international research environment, with close interaction with scientists and technical staff.
