New England Marine Monitoring (NEMM) is hiring Industry Funded Scallop Observers based in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with deployments ranging from one day to two weeks and an immediate start date.

Joining as an Industry Funded Scallop Observer provides quick growth opportunities into land-based work in the electronic monitoring program and additional at-sea opportunities. The role qualifies candidates for the NEMM Marine Data Acquisition Program, a 24-month fully paid cross-training career accelerator exclusive to NEMM employees, with paths to management for highly motivated staff.


Responsibilities

  • Deploy on commercial scallop fishing vessels for trips ranging from one day to two weeks.
  • Collect and document fishery data at sea using industry-funded scallop observing protocols.
  • Operate and support state-of-the-art marine electronic monitoring systems and AI-assisted fisheries software.
  • Complete fully compensated training in Falmouth, Massachusetts and contribute to the NEMM Marine Data Acquisition Program career accelerator.

Requirements

  • College degree in biological sciences.
  • 30 natural science credit hours, 1 math or statistics course, and 6 marine or fisheries credit hours.
  • Current Basic First Aid and CPR certification from an in-person American Red Cross or American Heart Association course.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes long hours.
  • Physically and mentally capable of the responsibilities of working at sea.
  • Ability to pass all training requirements.
  • Comfortable working with fish.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Desire and motivation to work in a high-growth business.
  • Interest in a fisheries technology career.
  • Experience identifying Northeast Atlantic fish and marine mammals.
  • Background in fisheries, marine science, biology, or scientific fieldwork.
  • Prior experience working on boats.
  • Current Industry Funded Scallop Observing certification.
