Habitat Interpreter

Mystic Aquarium is hiring a Habitat Interpreter to engage guests and deliver education and conservation messaging across the Aquarium indoor and outdoor habitats. Reporting to the Supervisor, Habitat Interpretation within the Marine Mammals and Birds department, the Interpreter is a key front-line connection between visitors and the Aquarium animals, exhibits, and conservation programmes.

The Interpreter facilitates conversations with guests of all ages at habitats including beluga whales, African penguins, Steller sea lions, harbour seals, and other animal exhibits. The role delivers narrations during animal training sessions and feedings, leads short presentations, and provides accurate information about animal natural history, husbandry, welfare, and conservation. The Interpreter answers questions, manages guest flow at busy exhibits, and helps create memorable, science-grounded experiences that inspire ocean stewardship.

Additional duties include supporting special events and education programmes, monitoring guest safety and animal welfare around exhibits, and contributing to the development of new interpretive scripts, signage, and digital content. The Interpreter collaborates with Animal Care, Education, and Operations teams to ensure consistent guest messaging and to support institutional priorities including accessibility, accreditation standards, and conservation outreach. The Interpreter participates in ongoing training to maintain content accuracy and presentation skills.

Required qualifications include excellent public speaking and interpersonal skills, comfort working with large and diverse audiences in indoor and outdoor settings, the ability to stand, walk, and present for extended periods, and willingness to work weekends, holidays, and variable hours including some evenings. A background in biology, environmental education, marine science, communication, or a related field is desirable. Prior experience in informal science education, zoo or aquarium settings, customer service, or performing arts is an asset. The position is full-time, non-exempt, and based on-site at the Mystic, Connecticut campus.
