Amey is hiring a Graduate Environmentalist on its HSEQ-HW Account in Glasgow, Scotland on a 2-year graduate programme with a guaranteed permanent position to transition into upon completion, starting at £30,000 per year with a start date of September 2026.

The Graduate Environmentalist works at the operational level in environment and sustainability across the Highways domain, helping transform carbon and climate-change ambitions of key clients into real actions while developing essential skills aligned with the ISEP Sustainability Skills Map. The role delivers Zero Carbon Solutions, Nature Based Solutions, and Compliant, Resilient, and Industry Best-Practice Solutions across Amey’s value chain.


Responsibilities

  • Work with environment, carbon, and sustainability professionals across Amey, clients, partners, and supply chain to deliver Zero Carbon, Nature Based, and Industry Best-Practice solutions across construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Provide environmental advice and support to operational team members, transferring knowledge and improving understanding.
  • Work with Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality professionals to provide assurance to operate within the Highways domain.
  • Review and brief changes in law and standards.
  • Ensure environmental and social issues are factored into decision-making; develop, review, and revise policies and procedures.
  • Identify environmental risks and opportunities; determine effective operational control measures including emergency response and climate-change resilience.
  • Support development of effective environmental and carbon management plans.
  • Undertake environmental permission applications including authorised waste and consents to discharge/abstract.
  • Undertake environmental assessments and implement mitigation into working practices.
  • Determine competence and awareness requirements; provide briefings and training.
  • Monitor compliance through inspections and audits.
  • Undertake environmental performance monitoring, analysis, and evaluation; write reports and make recommendations to business leaders.
  • Investigate events with the potential for or that have caused pollution or damage to environmental assets.
  • Maintain ISO 14001 certification of integrated management systems.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a University Environmental Programme (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in Ecology, Environment, Sustainability, or related field.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Good oral communication; able to present arguments and ideas.
  • Ability to produce reports to a good standard.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Passion for personal and professional development.
  • Drive, determination, and ability to work to deadlines on own initiative.
  • Team player across own team and virtual teams.
  • Holds self accountable to meet commitments.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Student ISEP Membership.

Additional Notes

  • Permanent position after completion of the 2-year graduate programme.
  • Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00, 37.5 hours per week, based at Polmadie Road, Glasgow.
  • Start date: September 2026.
  • Holidays: 24 days plus bank holidays, with option to buy more.
