Description
The North York Moors National Park Authority is hiring a GIS Officer in Helmsley, North Yorkshire, at £33,672 to £36,580 per year, with applications due June 7, 2026.
The North York Moors National Park Authority cares for one of the most phenomenal parts of the British Isles, supporting conservation, access, and land management across the National Park. The Authority’s geospatial work underpins this mission, providing the mapping and data tools that staff, volunteers, and partners rely on.
The GIS Officer acts as the lead professional for GIS systems and spatial data, supporting mapping, database management, and the development of innovative geospatial solutions. The role provides expert technical support across GIS platforms (including Earthlight, QGIS, and online mapping systems) and works closely with teams across the Authority to develop confidence in GIS systems and mobile GIS devices.
Responsibilities
- Lead GIS systems and spatial data work across the Authority.
- Maintain and develop spatial databases to ensure accuracy, integration, and accessibility of data.
- Provide expert technical support across GIS platforms including Earthlight, QGIS, and online mapping systems.
- Deliver training and support to staff, volunteers, and students on GIS systems and mobile devices.
- Manage aerial photography, LIDAR, and other spatial datasets.
- Oversee the quality and publication of GIS datasets.
- Lead compliance with the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement and liaise with Ordnance Survey.
- Develop bespoke ICT systems to meet organisational requirements.
- Ensure all work complies with GDPR, Health and Safety, and equality standards.
Requirements
- Experience applying GIS in professional contexts, including data management, mapping, and analysis.
- Experience in SQL for querying (including spatial data), managing data, and reporting services.
- Strong understanding of GIS, digital mapping, cartography, and spatial data analysis.
- Effective communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
- Training in GIS software and spatial databases.
Additional Notes
- Full-time, permanent. 37 hours per week.
- 25 days annual leave, rising annually by one day to 30 days after five years’ service, plus public holidays.
- Local Government Pension Scheme.
