GIS and Planning Assistant
Website Forestry England
Forestry England is hiring a GIS and Planning Assistant to support forestry, environment, and wider land management teams in its East Forest District. The post sits within the Planning Team and works closely with the Forest Planner on the production and review of forest plans and the coordination of operational planning processes.
The role coordinates the collection, processing, and management of spatial data, and uses that data to support decision-making on forest planning and operational planning. Day-to-day work includes producing maps, reports, analyses, and visualisations of spatial data, and collaborating with ecologists, foresters, and other colleagues to ensure outputs meet the high standards of Forestry England’s sustainable forest management certifications.
The East Forest District covers a range of habitats from large productive coniferous forest and mixed broadleaved woodlands to heathland, chalk and acid grasslands, and streams across north Norfolk down to East Sussex. The district has launched a Forest Resilience Plan focused on lower-impact silviculture, more diverse and connected habitats, Ancient Woodland restoration, and trialling tree species suited to a future climate.
The post is a 3-year fixed-term appointment with the possibility of extension or permanency, salaried at £30,105 per annum. Pension contribution averages 28.97% through the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension Scheme, with 25 days holiday rising to 30 with service, plus bank holidays and the STaR employee benefits scheme. A full UK driving licence is required, as some duties involve travel to remote locations not served by public transport. Successful candidates undergo a criminal record check and the government baseline personnel security standard check. The role is DEFRA-funded under the Biodiversity Programme.
