Description
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is hiring a Forestry Manager Romania, a remote, full-time, two-year contract role driving FSC’s national forest management strategy and stakeholder engagement across Romania, with the possibility of extension.
FSC is redefining how forests are managed globally, balancing environmental protection, social impact, and economic value. Romania is one of Europe’s most strategically important forest landscapes, with increasing regulatory attention, complex ownership structures, and high expectations on governance. FSC is strengthening its presence in the country.
The Forestry Manager combines technical expertise, stakeholder influence, and strategic thinking to grow FSC’s impact in Romania. The role operates at the intersection of forestry, policy, and market development; it is high-impact and externally facing rather than purely technical, and the postholder represents FSC across the national forest sector while shaping policy, market dynamics, and stakeholder alignment.
Responsibilities
Drive forest management growth:
- Develop and execute a national strategy to grow FSC Forest Management certification.
- Build and manage a pipeline of certification opportunities (state, private forests, smallholders).
- Expand FSC-certified forest area and number of certificate holders.
- Unlock opportunities in group certification and address fragmented ownership structures.
Lead stakeholder engagement:
- Act as FSC’s primary contact for forest owners, state forest administration, certification bodies, NGOs, and industry.
- Establish and maintain relationships with government institutions, including the Ministry of Environment, related parliament committees, and Romsilva.
- Represent FSC in policy dialogues, conferences, and public forums.
- Act as the main contact point for FM-related topics in Romania.
Standards and technical leadership:
- Support implementation and evolution of the FSC Forest Stewardship Standard for Romania.
- Provide technical guidance to stakeholders.
- Coordinate the Forest Stewardship Standard and Risk Assessment development or revision processes, ensuring chamber balance and stakeholder inclusion.
Build capability and market awareness:
- Deliver trainings, workshops, and stakeholder engagement initiatives.
- Promote FSC through communication and knowledge sharing.
- Strengthen awareness of FSC value across the sector.
Collaborate and influence internally:
- Work closely with European and global FSC teams.
- Contribute to regional initiatives and strategic priorities.
- Provide insights on risks, opportunities, and market developments.
- Build trust and strong partnership in teams.
Requirements
- 10+ years in forestry, sustainability, certification, or related fields.
- Strong understanding of the Romanian forestry sector and governance landscape.
- Experience engaging with government and industry stakeholders.
- Strong stakeholder management and negotiation skills.
- Ability to combine technical expertise with strategic thinking.
- Project management and execution capability.
- Government engagement experience in the field of forestry.
- High level of independence and accountability.
- Degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, or related field.
- Fluency in Romanian and English.
Preferred Qualifications
- FSC or certification experience.
- Auditing experience.
Additional Notes
- Location: Romania, remote.
- Full-time, 40 hours per week.
- Two-year contract with possibility of extension.

- FSC is a global, mission-driven organisation; the role is high-visibility and high-impact.
