Position Overview

Salary: $21 to $30 per hour, depending on education and experience (no benefits)


Description

The U.S. Geological Survey Great Lakes Science Center is hiring a student services contractor as a Fisheries Technician in Ann Arbor, Michigan, paying $21 to $30 per hour, with the position open until filled.

The USGS Great Lakes Science Center is the federal research lab dedicated to providing science to support sound management and conservation of Great Lakes fishery and ecosystem resources. The deepwater science section runs lake-wide fish population monitoring across Lakes Michigan and Huron and other Great Lakes.

The Fisheries Technician assists with field and laboratory activities tied to lake-wide fish population monitoring during the 2026 to 2027 field seasons, supporting research focused on the status of prey fish and their predators.


Responsibilities

  • Participate in trawl, acoustic, and gill net surveys on Lakes Michigan and Huron, and occasionally other lakes.
  • Work aboard large research ships and small vessels, including in inclement weather.
  • Process biological samples collected during field surveys in the laboratory.
  • Perform tasks across field, laboratory, and office settings.

Requirements

  • Background and interest in aquatic ecology and fisheries science.
  • Currently enrolled in a relevant 4-year college or university program (biology, zoology, ecology, fisheries, natural resource management) or graduated from a 4-year college within the past 12 months.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
