South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL)

The South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) is hiring a Fisheries Restoration Project Manager within its Watershed Science department to lead salmonid and native fisheries restoration projects across the Yuba River watershed, with a focus on the lower (anadromous) portion of the river. The position is full-time, based in Nevada City, California, and combines office and field work. SYRCL is a community-based nonprofit that protects, restores, and celebrates the Yuba River watershed.

The Project Manager leads multi-year fisheries restoration projects from concept through permitting, design, construction, and post-project monitoring. Responsibilities include managing project budgets and contracts with consulting engineers, environmental scientists, and construction contractors; developing and tracking project schedules and deliverables; preparing and submitting grant applications and reports; coordinating with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the US Army Corps of Engineers, local agencies, and private landowners; and conducting field reconnaissance, monitoring, and adaptive management.

Additional responsibilities include leading public outreach and education on fisheries restoration; supporting SYRCL advocacy work to improve flow management, fish passage, and habitat outcomes; coordinating with watershed-wide partners on basin-scale priorities; mentoring SYRCL staff, interns, and volunteers engaged in restoration work; and contributing to fundraising, board reporting, and organisational planning. The Project Manager is expected to spend significant time in the field, particularly during permitting reconnaissance and construction season.

Required qualifications include several years of project management experience in fisheries or watershed restoration, with experience leading projects through permitting and construction phases; familiarity with California salmonids, anadromous fish passage, and floodplain habitat restoration; demonstrated ability to write competitive grant proposals and manage public and private funding; strong organisational and communication skills; and willingness to work outdoors in variable conditions, including wading, hiking, and lifting. A degree in fisheries biology, ecology, environmental science, watershed management, or a related field is desirable.
