Environmental Marine Research Scientist – Oceanography

The Cawthron Institute is recruiting an Environmental Marine Research Scientist with a focus on physical oceanography to join its marine research team in Nelson, New Zealand. Cawthron is New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation, and a leading marine and freshwater science institute with active research programmes across aquaculture, marine ecology, biosecurity, coastal hazards and ocean health. The Institute works with industry, government, iwi/hapū, communities and international partners across New Zealand and the Pacific.

The Environmental Marine Research Scientist will lead and contribute to applied oceanographic research projects, working at the intersection of physical oceanography, marine ecology and applied environmental management. Research areas include coastal and shelf oceanography, circulation modelling, hydrodynamic and biogeochemical modelling, marine spatial planning, climate change impacts on marine ecosystems, ocean acidification, and the oceanographic drivers of biological productivity. The role contributes to research projects funded by central and local government, primary industries, iwi/hapū and international partners.

Responsibilities include leading and contributing to oceanographic research projects from proposal to delivery; conducting field measurements at sea and in coastal environments; running and interpreting hydrodynamic and biogeochemical models; analysing observational and model data; publishing in peer-reviewed journals and producing applied client reports; supervising graduate students and early-career scientists; engaging with clients, partners and stakeholders including iwi/hapū; contributing to business development, proposal writing and project budgeting; and contributing to Cawthron’s broader research strategy and team culture.

Required qualifications include a PhD in oceanography, marine science, physical oceanography or related field; a strong record of applied or fundamental oceanographic research; demonstrated experience in hydrodynamic or biogeochemical modelling; experience with field oceanographic measurements; strong scientific writing and communication skills; experience engaging with clients, partners or stakeholders; experience leading projects and supervising junior researchers; and a commitment to applied science and to building enduring partnerships with iwi/hapū, communities, industry and government in Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific.
