Description

SoundWaters is hiring Educator/Deckhands aboard the 80-foot Schooner SoundWaters in Stamford, Connecticut, on a temporary live-aboard basis at $400 per week for the 2026 sailing season.

SoundWaters is a nonprofit education organisation founded in 1989 that works toward a sustainable Long Island Sound through teaching, training, sailing, and study. The organisation delivers marine science programs annually for over 30,000 students aboard the Schooner, at Coastal Education and Harbor Centers, and along the coast.

The Schooner SoundWaters offers STEM programs designed for schools, community organisations, and the general public to learn about Long Island Sound. Educators live aboard the vessel and provide a mix of marine science instruction, vessel operations support, and guest experience.


Responsibilities

  • Deliver SoundWaters marine science curriculum to students of all ages and from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Provide outstanding educational and engaging experiences to all guests aboard the schooner.
  • Prepare the schooner for public sails and educational programs.
  • Assist with sailing, mooring, anchoring, and docking of the schooner under the captain’s direction.
  • Tend dock lines and assist with sail handling.
  • Monitor passenger safety and follow all emergency protocols.
  • Share information about Long Island Sound and engage in guest relations.
  • Assist with vessel maintenance projects throughout the season and maintain education equipment.
  • Share in daily chores including cleaning and custodial tasks of the vessel.
  • Maintain and adhere to a safe and drug-free environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in marine science or a relevant discipline.
  • Must be over 21 years of age.
  • Must be authorised to work in the United States.
  • Must be comfortable working in a variety of weather and sea conditions.
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to work with diverse audiences.
  • Willingness to live aboard the vessel for the duration of the sailing season.

Additional Notes

  • All crew live aboard the schooner.
  • Compensation includes $400 per week plus $200 travel stipend (half paid after first two weeks, balance with final paycheck).
  • Benefits include access to fitness center and pool facilities and other amenities.
  • No previous sailing experience required; training provided.
