Editorial Fellow Internship, Sierra Magazine
Sierra Club
The Sierra Club is recruiting an Editorial Fellow for Sierra Magazine, an opportunity for an early-career journalist seeking real-world experience in the day-to-day work of magazine publishing. The Sierra Club has close to 700 staff across the country and a network of 64 local chapters led and fuelled by thousands of volunteers, and is a unionised employer with three labour unions representing more than half of its employees. The organisation works on the climate crisis built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic and gender justice.
Fellows get an overview of all aspects of acquiring content for and producing a national environmental and news magazine, including writing and reporting stories for both print and online, fact-checking and proofreading articles prior to publication, and developing their own story ideas and leads.
Job activities include writing weekly articles and dispatches for the magazine’s online edition; writing short articles and news dispatches for the print edition; fact-checking articles for the magazine; carrying out short- and long-term research or writing projects as needed; attending weekly editorial meetings; participating in writing workshops to improve craft; cultivating and expanding social media reach and maintaining strategies for building new audiences; and handling miscellaneous editorial office duties as needed.
Required skills and experience include a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; strong writing, research and editing skills; awareness of and interest in environmental and social justice issues; the ability to multitask and work under deadlines; familiarity with Sierra print and online content and tone; and self-starter qualities. Published clips or experience working at a publication (campus or general circulation) is a plus. The strongest candidates will also demonstrate a background in environmental, conservation, climate or social justice work, and published writing clips in these or related topics.
The Sierra Club values applicants who identify as Black, Indigenous and other minoritised groups; women; and queer, transgender, gender non-conforming and gender fluid people.
