Mwambao Coastal Community Network

Mwambao Coastal Community Network is hiring an Ecological Data Manager to support the design, collection, management, and analysis of ecological monitoring data across its coastal community sites in Tanzania. Mwambao works to strengthen the rights and capacities of coastal communities to manage and benefit from their marine and coastal resources. The role is based in Zanzibar (Unguja or Pemba) or Tanga, with travel to community sites in Tanga and Zanzibar.

The Data Manager supports the planning of biological and socio-ecological surveys (including reef and seagrass surveys, mangrove monitoring, fish landing data, and community-based monitoring), maintains Mwambao monitoring databases, ensures data quality and integrity, contributes to data analysis and reporting, and supports community partners in using monitoring data to inform local management decisions. The role also contributes to GIS mapping and spatial analysis to support community-led management of locally managed marine areas.

Additional responsibilities include training Mwambao staff and community monitors in data collection and management practices, supporting funder reporting and grant management, contributing to scientific papers and policy briefs, and collaborating closely with the senior team to align monitoring work with the network strategic priorities. The role offers significant exposure to community-based marine management in one of the world richest tropical coastal regions.

Required qualifications include a degree in marine science, ecology, fisheries, geography, or a related field; demonstrated experience with ecological monitoring and data management; familiarity with statistical analysis software (R or similar) and GIS tools; strong written and verbal English communication skills; comfort working with community partners and government stakeholders; and willingness to travel to remote field sites in Tanga and Zanzibar. Swahili language ability is a strong asset. Prior experience in East Africa marine and coastal management is desirable.
