Divemaster and Research Diver Internship

Indo Ocean Project

The Indo Ocean Project is recruiting participants for its Divemaster and Research Diver Internship at field sites in Nusa Penida (Bali), Raja Ampat (West Papua) and Bira (South Sulawesi), Indonesia. The Indo Ocean Project is a marine research and conservation training organisation that uses citizen science, SCUBA training and field-based research to advance marine conservation in Indonesia.

The Divemaster and Research Diver Internship combines professional SCUBA training (working towards the PADI Divemaster certification) with field-based marine research training and project participation. The programme is suitable for divers and aspiring scientists who want to combine professional dive training with hands-on marine conservation research experience in some of Indonesia’s most biodiverse and important marine ecosystems.

Programme components include PADI Divemaster training and professional dive development; training in marine research methods including fish, coral and macro-invertebrate surveys; training in citizen science data collection; participation in active research and conservation projects on coral reefs, sharks and rays, manta rays, marine megafauna and reef ecology; and the opportunity to contribute to long-term datasets used by partner organisations and researchers.

The programme is participant-funded, with weekly fees of $380 to $490 covering training, accommodation, project participation and most diving costs. Required qualifications include open water certification (or higher) and the ability to commit to the duration of the chosen programme. Suitable for early-career professionals, gap-year students, career-changers and divers interested in combining professional dive training with marine science.

Applications and enquiries should be directed via the Indo Ocean Project website. Note that this is a participant-funded programme rather than a paid internship.
