The Coral Restoration Foundation, headquartered in Tavernier, Florida, offers full-time volunteer internships focused on the restoration of coral reef ecosystems in the Florida Keys. Both land-based and combined water-land placements are available, with interns gaining experience across community engagement programmes, daily operations, and field conservation work. During their first term, each intern is mentored through a personal project; those who progress may advance to Lead Intern and then Programme Intern roles in subsequent terms.
Dive interns must hold a minimum Advanced Open Water SCUBA certification (Rescue certification or higher preferred), with at least 30 logged dives including 15 from a boat and five in the ocean, along with current CPR, First Aid, and oxygen administration certifications and dive insurance. All applicants must be at least 21 years of age, hold active CPR/First Aid and oxygen administration certifications, and be enrolled in or have graduated from an accredited undergraduate or graduate programme. The role requires a high level of physical fitness, including the ability to carry 65 pounds and lift 35 pounds overhead. Dive interns should expect up to three shallow-water dives per day for up to five consecutive days per week. Housing and reliable transport must be arranged independently by the intern; the cost of living in the Florida Keys ranges from approximately $800 to $1,200 per month.
