Description

Hume City Council is hiring a Coordinator Waste Operations based in Coolaroo, Victoria, Australia, a permanent full-time leadership role with annual salary of AUD 126,861 to 140,928 plus superannuation, sitting within the Infrastructure and Assets team.

The Waste and Sustainability department’s Waste Operations unit delivers a broad service portfolio across municipal cleansing and waste response.

The Coordinator Waste Operations leads the unit, manages supervisors and team leaders, and oversees service delivery across road and pavement sweeping, shop cleaning, underground drainage cleansing and maintenance, the waste response program, removal of litter and illegally dumped waste (including hazardous materials), trolley and charity bin impoundment, and graffiti removal.


Responsibilities

  • Provide effective leadership and management of the Waste Operations unit, engaging and motivating employees to demonstrate values-aligned behaviour and meet service standards.
  • Develop leadership skills within the unit and maximise the contribution of supervisors, team leaders, and employees.
  • Coordinate, lead, and maximise unit performance through induction, recruitment, performance management, and training (internal and external).
  • Oversee services delivered by the Waste Operations unit: road and pavement sweeping, shop cleaning, underground drainage cleansing and maintenance, waste response program, removal of litter and illegally dumped waste (including hazardous materials), trolley and charity bin impoundment, and graffiti removal.
  • Coordinate Operations Supervisors and Team Leaders to maintain a high level of customer service and resolve service delivery issues.
  • Ensure services adhere to service-level agreements, safety and industry standards, and relevant policy, legislation, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in engineering, environmental science, management, or a related discipline with relevant field experience.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills, with the ability to manage a diverse, multi-disciplinary team, preferably in an operational Local Government context.
  • Demonstrated experience complying with Occupational Health and Safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Sound knowledge of contemporary resource recovery and waste management practice and legislation, including environmental compliance.
  • Proven analytical and decision-making ability, with capacity to develop strategies, policies, plans, systems, and projects aligned with Council goals.
  • Current driver licence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and working knowledge across multiple functional areas in the waste industry.
  • Strong record of contributing to broader growth strategies and delivering on contract growth, improvements, and cost management.
  • Experience and understanding of services disciplines and delivery within a Local Government environment.
  • Efficient time management with the ability to plan, organise, and deliver against changing and conflicting priorities.
  • Understanding and implementation of personnel policies including equal employment opportunity, OH&S, recruitment and selection, performance management, and training and development.
