Rare is hiring a Junior Program Implementation Coordinator to work on its programme in Brazil supporting artisanal fishing communities along the Amapa coast. Rare mission is to drive positive change for both people and nature, with an entrepreneurial, results-oriented culture focused on ambitious targets and tangible outcomes. The Coordinator collaborates across global teams and within Rare Brazil, contributing to the growth of the organisation presence in the country.
Reporting to the Senior Program Implementation Manager, the Junior Coordinator oversees the planning, execution, and evaluation of conservation initiatives on the Amapa coast. The role requires strong leadership, project management, and communication skills, alongside a deep commitment to both community work and conservation. The selected candidate will lead community engagement and strengthen local organisations in coastal communities of Amapa, as part of Rare Brazil programme to support fishing communities in sustainable management, strengthen community leadership, and prepare territories for the potential establishment of new Conservation Units (Unidades de Conservacao).
Essential functions include developing community engagement activities with fishers, local leaders, and associations; supporting capacity-building and continuous training processes for communities; strengthening community movements and local social organisations; contributing to the implementation of Rare Brazil programme activities; supporting community and institutional articulation toward the creation of new Conservation Units in the state; supporting event logistics inside and outside communities; supporting mobilisation for behaviour-change campaigns promoted by Rare Brazil; supporting programme events through community mobilisation, activity facilitation, report preparation, and production support; and conducting field travel including road and boat journeys.
Required qualifications include a university degree in an environmental field or equivalent (such as fisheries engineering, biology, ecology, oceanography), a valid driver licence (category B), fluency in spoken and written Portuguese, excellent communication skills and the ability to work in teams with sensitivity to diversity and intercultural contexts, and proficiency with MS Office. Prior experience in grassroots community work, socio-environmental agendas, or artisanal fishing contexts is essential. Group facilitation, communication, and dialogue mediation skills are required, along with availability for frequent travel (overland and by boat). Knowledge of community-based natural resource management and Brazilian environmental policy (SNUC, RESEX, protected areas) is desirable.
