Coastal Ecology Internship

Dauphin Island Sea Lab

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) is recruiting a Coastal Ecology Intern to support its applied coastal and marine ecology research programmes. DISL is the marine science laboratory of the State of Alabama, operating a research and education campus on Dauphin Island at the mouth of Mobile Bay, with active research programmes across the Gulf of Mexico and Alabama’s coastal habitats.

The Coastal Ecology Internship supports DISL researchers in coastal and estuarine ecology research, including field surveys, sample processing, laboratory analysis and data management. The internship offers hands-on experience in applied coastal ecology research at one of the Gulf Coast’s leading marine science institutions, with potential involvement in marsh ecology, seagrass ecology, fisheries science, oyster reef restoration, water quality monitoring or related research areas.

Responsibilities include supporting researchers in the design and conduct of field surveys in coastal and estuarine habitats; assisting with sample collection, processing and laboratory analysis; supporting data entry, management and quality control; supporting field equipment maintenance and laboratory operations; contributing to research publications and reports as appropriate; and participating in DISL’s broader research, education and outreach activities.

Required qualifications include current undergraduate or recent graduate status in marine biology, marine science, environmental science, ecology or related field; coursework in marine biology, ecology or environmental science; the ability to conduct field work in challenging Gulf Coast conditions (heat, humidity, biting insects, work on boats); strong attention to detail; the ability to work independently and as part of a team; US citizenship or permanent residency; and a commitment to applied coastal ecology research.
