Marine Conservation Institute

Marine Conservation Institute is offering a Blue Parks Science Internship to support the global Blue Parks initiative, which recognises and rewards outstanding marine protected areas (MPAs) around the world. The internship is fully remote, 12 weeks in duration (with possibility of extension), and has a flexible start date beginning in late June or July. Interns commit a minimum of 20 hours per week and report to the Blue Parks Director.

The Intern supports the science team in evaluating nominated MPAs against the Blue Parks Criteria, reviewing technical documentation, management plans, and peer-reviewed literature; preparing summary reports and presentations for the Council of MPA experts and the science team; supporting outreach with MPA managers, governments, and partner organisations; and contributing to communications products including blog posts, social media content, and infographics for the Blue Parks programme.

Additional responsibilities include supporting database maintenance and analysis on global MPA quality and coverage, helping prepare materials for the annual Blue Parks award announcement, and contributing to MCI broader marine protection campaigns. The internship offers strong exposure to global marine conservation policy and to MPA practitioners around the world.

Required qualifications include current enrolment in or recent completion of a degree in marine science, conservation, biology, environmental policy, geography, or a related field; strong written and verbal English communication skills; ability to read and synthesize scientific literature; comfort working independently in a remote, distributed team; familiarity with marine protected areas, ocean conservation, or related topics is a plus; and access to a reliable internet connection and computer. International applicants welcome; the Institute cannot support visas or provide financial support. The Institute is happy to work with interns and their universities to obtain academic credit (negotiation with the institution is the intern responsibility). A $1,000 stipend is available to US-based interns to offset home office expenses.
