Description
LSU AgCenter and Louisiana Sea Grant are hiring an Assistant or Associate Extension Agent for Fisheries and Coastal Issues, based at the St. Mary Parish Extension Office in Franklin, Louisiana, on a full-time non-tenure track faculty appointment.
The position sits within the Marine Extension Project (MEP), a joint program of LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program. The Area Agent serves St. Mary and surrounding parishes, a region supporting commercial fishing firms, aquaculture businesses, ecotourism, and more than 1,100 square miles of land and water.
The Area Agent plans, executes, and evaluates a multidisciplinary educational program for residents, local officials, natural resource users, private landowners, and coastal marine-related businesses. Primary focus areas include sustainable economic development and management of regional fisheries, wetlands, water, and other natural resources, as well as community resilience related to environmental change, wetland loss, and storm surge threats.
Responsibilities
- Plan, execute, and evaluate a multidisciplinary educational program serving residents, officials, resource users, landowners, and coastal businesses.
- Develop and deliver programs on sustainable economic development, fisheries management, wetlands, water resources, and community resilience.
- Establish advisory committees to formulate and evaluate annual plans of work.
- Collaborate with parish governments, municipal planners, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and commercial and recreational fishing organisations.
- Use multiple delivery methods including personal contact, workshops and conferences, web-based content, mass media communication, publications and fact sheets, public presentations, and advisory committee work.
- Produce professional written publications, fact sheets, and reports as a regular component of annual duties.
- Help residents and elected officials make informed decisions on development affecting unincorporated areas and smaller municipalities.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a field related to natural resource management, fisheries, wildlife, biology, marine science, biological science, or environmental science.
- Some experience in applied research, data collection, user group participation, and applied resource management.
- Strong communication, planning, and collaboration skills with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to work across parish governments, state and federal agencies, NGOs, and the commercial fishing community.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a related field for placement at the Associate Agent level.
- Experience with Louisiana coastal communities, fisheries, or wetland management.
- Experience securing grant funding and developing extension publications.
