In Belize, vibrant coral reefs, lush rainforests, and rich cultural heritage combine with a remarkable commitment to conservation. This isn’t just a travel destination; it’s a pioneering country dedicated to protecting its natural treasures.

Journeys With Purpose designs transformative experiences that allow travellers to explore the beauty of Belize while actively contributing to its conservation efforts. These immersive field experiences are designed for those seeking travel that creates a positive impact, who have a desire to engage in worthwhile initiatives protecting Belize’s ecosystems, wildlife and communities.

Why Belize?

Belize’s wildernesses are vast, serving as a critical area for global biodiversity, and the nation’s commitment to nature is a testament to its successful environmental stewardship, with 36% of its land and 28% of its water already protected (NPAS, 2024). The Protected Areas Conservation (PACT) Act, passed in 1996, has led to the establishment of 103 protected areas, illustrating what can be achieved through a collective sustainability effort.

“Nature Conservation is part of our history. It’s part of our heritage. It’s part of our culture.” Dr. Elma Kay, Belize Maya Forest Trust

Belize’s East coast is home to the second-largest barrier reef in the world. An important, irreplaceable ecosystem that, while recently removed from UNESCO’s endangered list, still requires ongoing protection. The reef supports a diverse array of marine life including endangered species like the hawksbill turtle and manatees, and plays a crucial role in the local economy, providing livelihood for countless fisherman and tourism operators. Unfortunately, despite its recent removal from the UNESCO endangered list, the reef remains under threat from climate change, pollution and unsustainable fishing practices.

Belize’s land biomes are at risk too; continued deforestation and slash-and-burn farming practices are degrading the Maya Forest and damaging habitats for the numerous species, including jaguars and scarlet macaws, that inhabit its vibrant ecosystems.

Belize derives much of its wealth from nature. Roni Martinez, a renowned Belizean tour leader and ornithologist, emphasises that nature is what attracts tourists to Belize, making its preservation essential for those who depend on the economic vitality of tourism.

Transformative Experiences with Journeys With Purpose

Journeys With Purpose invites travellers to roll up their sleeves and actively engage in preserving Belize’s unique ecosystems through purpose-first travel. Their journeys, which range from exploration of mangrove forests in the company of marine biologists to jaguar-trekking jungle hikes in the company of prominent carnivore researchers, are designed to both educate and engage guests in the preservation of our natural world.

Through these programmes, guests can discover meaningful ways to contribute a positive impact. The itineraries they design are both rewarding and fun, and the memories sure to last a lifetime.

  • Coral Reef Restoration: Join the expert team at the Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association (TASA) to explore Turneffe Atoll, Belize’s largest atoll, renowned for its stunning marine ecosystems, including mangroves and vibrant coral reefs. This unique habitat is home to sea turtles, manatees, and colourful fish like Nassau groupers and rainbow parrotfish. TASA will introduce you to the local fishermen who have become stewards of the reef, protecting it from unsustainable practices. You will be given the opportunity to get hands-on experience in planting and nurturing new coral structures and learn directly from the leadership team of TASA, alongside the likes of Executive Director, Valdemar Andrad.
  • Wildlife Protection: Engage in the field research of endangered species. Whether tracking jaguars in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve with Virginia Tech’s researchers or assisting with manatee surveys along the coast, your contributions will help gather critical data that informs conservation strategies. Immersive experiences such as jungle sleep outs, night treks and tranquil boat rides along Macal River encourage guests to experience the wilderness of Belize with heightened senses from a whole new perspective. These journeys are designed for travellers who want authentic experiences in nature, who are seeking activities far removed from the beaten track
  • Educational Workshops: Participate in workshops led by local experts and leading biologists covering topics such as endangered species monitoring, biodiversity and sustainable farming practices. These think-tanks-in-the-wilds encourage guests to learn directly from experts in the field, the hidden heroes on the frontline of tackling the climate and biodiversity crises.

Be inspired for an experiential discovery of Belize’s natural wealth with this example itinerary.
