ECSA 61

ECSA 61 is themed “Bridging the gap between science and policy in estuarine and coastal marine biodiversity: the way forward”, and brings together a global multi-disciplinary community of researchers and professionals working across coastal and estuarine sciences. The organisers frame the conference around the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, and the point that threats to biodiversity operate from local to global scales and require international collaborative action, with attention across all maritime areas on assessing and managing those threats and planning for the sustainable use of estuaries, coasts and seas.
The programme builds on the results of several Horizon Europe projects and is intended to show recent advances in coastal marine research alongside their applications for European and international policy. For the first time, ECSA is running a Science-meets-Policy day on 27 August 2026, giving delegates the chance to discuss research findings and their applications with managers and decision-makers from Europe and elsewhere, including how those findings can feed into current monitoring and assessment policies.
