Distributed Ocean Sensing

Organizer: Discovery of Sound in the Sea (DOSITS)

Date and Time: Wednesday, September 23, 2026 · 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EST

Location: Virtual

Format and Highlights:

  • Duration: 1.0 h
  • Format: Virtual (Zoom webinar with YouTube Live stream)

About This Event: This session in the 2026 DOSITS webinar series explores the use of fiber-optic cable networks as large-scale, dynamic acoustic arrays for observing ocean processes and marine life. Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) represents a transformative approach to underwater observation, repurposing existing telecommunications infrastructure into vast sensing networks.

Professional development certificates are available to individuals who attend or watch the archived video of all four DOSITS webinars in a calendar year and complete the associated questionnaire for each session. All webinars are recorded and archived on the DOSITS website and on Vimeo.

What to Expect:

  • Presentation on distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) using fiber-optic cable networks
  • Discussion of how these systems observe ocean processes, ambient noise, and marine life
  • Exploration of applications spanning noise interferometry, sound source localization, and marine bioacoustics
  • Facilitated Q&A with attendees following the presentation

Panel Presenters / Speakers:

  • Dr. Shima Abadi — Professor, University of Washington
